Hi! What Can I(oT) do for you?

When BCBS RI approached us to assess IoT’s potential impact on their organization, we began by conducting interviews with key stakeholders, including the CFO and CIO. These conversations provided valuable insights into the average subscriber’s user journey, common pain points, and existing technology usage.

At the same time, we analyzed the broader health tech landscape, examining emerging trends such as smartwatches, remote care, and mobile apps. This dual approach allowed us to identify strategic opportunities where IoT could enhance user experiences and improve operational efficiency.

Why storytelling over product design?

Though research we found these core findings:

🔷
BCBSRI saw smart technology as a way to link together multiple user types, such as healthcare providers and different user personas within families
🔷 BCBSRI had tech they were already interested in and developing but had little vision for how individual initiatives would synthesize into a true Internet of Things
🔷
The biggest hurdle was garnering support for larger, overarching initiatives from shareholders

Recognizing these points, we saw the need to visually integrate their specific technology ideas into one cohesive narrative. Through this "user story", we could both offer them guidance on what an ideal user journey enhanced by the IoT would look like as well a deliverable to communicate the groups' findings with shareholders.

Takeaways

Our work with BCBS RI showed that uncovering unspoken needs is just as important as researching the technology itself. While they had smart tech initiatives in mind, they lacked a clear vision for how these pieces fit together. Through stakeholder interviews and industry research, we helped them see the bigger picture—turning scattered ideas into a clear, cohesive IoT strategy that resonated with decision-makers.
